Biographies of first round of trainees

MST. Sabina Yesmin is from Northern part of Bangladesh Rangpur district. She is a member of Bangladesh Kishani Sabha and a university student. Her parents are peasants and she is involved with cultivation. She is selected by Rangpur district committee of BKF and BKS.

In the Rangpur district Indigenous people are very disadvantaged. They do not have enough land and they can’t sell their land without government permission. They are also not recognized in the Bangladeshi constitution as Indigenous. So, in Rangpur district BKF/BKS have movements for land rights for Indigenous landless people and also fight for constitutional recognition of the Indigenous community. Women’s rights and climate change issue are also important issues in Rangpur district as well as all over Bangladesh.

Sree Sabuj Chandra Barmon is from Northern part of Bangladesh Rangpur district. He belongs to an Indigenous family. His parents are landless peasants and he is involved with rice cultivation. He has been a member of Bangladesh Krishok Federation for some time. He wishes to build a strong movement for landless Indigenous people to get land for cultivation.

In the Rangpur district Indigenous people are very disadvantaged. They do not have enough land and they can’t sell their land without government permission. So, in Rangpur district we have movements for land rights for Indigenous landless people and we are also fighting for constitutional recognition of the Indigenous community. Some communities of Indigenous people are still living on the occupied land, although they are under threat of eviction by local influentials.

Md. Bashir Ahmed is a member of Bangladesh Krishok Federation. He is from Southern part of Bangladesh Patuakhali district. His parents have been involved with BKF and BKS from a long time. They were part of a successful land occupation movement lead by BKF and BKS. He is living on an occupied Char (Tiny Island) in Patuakhali district and he is a peasant. He also was part of different peasant movements in the area. He has been selected for training as a youth by Patuakhali district committee of BKF and BKS.

BKF has started successful land occupation movements from Patuakhali district. Land occupation movements are also occurring there. Patuakhali is severely affected by the rising sea level and devastating cyclones. Women’s rights and climate change are important issues in Patuakhali district as well as all over Bangladesh.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAMST. Shahina Akter is from Northern part of Bangladesh Kurigram district. She is a new member of Bangladesh Kishani Sabha. She is a high school student. She grew up in a peasant family. She became a trainee as a youth. She is selected by Kurigram district committee of BKF and BKS.

Kurigram district is one of the poorest districts of Bangladesh. There are huge numbers of landless, and also lots of fallow lands and common water bodies are there. We have strong land and water bodies occupation movements in Kurigram. Kurigram is facing severe drought and cold problems due to climate change. Women’s rights and climate change issue are important issues in Kurigram district as well as all over Bangladesh.

One of our leaders was killed by big land owners in Kurigram in 2012. Under his leadership landless people occupied a large area of abandoned railway land, 2000 families still live there.

His father is a general secretary of the BKF Kurigram district committee. He has been involved with the peasant movement from childhood. He is a rice cultivator. He has been selected for training as a youth by Kurigram district committee of BKF and BKS.

Rabindra Nath Roy is a trainee from Northern part of Bangladesh Kurigram district. He is from minority Hindu community. His parents have been involved with BKF and BKS for a long time. He is also a member of the Nageswari sub-district committee of BKF. He is a peasant and a student. He has been selected for training as a youth by Kurigram district committee of BKF and BKS.

Rekha Rani Adhikary is a trainee from Southern part of Bangladesh Khulna district. She is from a minority Hindu community. Her parents have been involved with BKF and BKS from the beginning of the organization. She has been a member of BKS for a long time.

She has been selected for training as a woman by Dhaka city committee of BKF and BKS.

Climate change is the big issue for Khulna district. Sea level rise, salinity increasing, peasant are facing crops failure often, cyclones and sea waves are also severely affecting to peasant community. BKF and BKS has a movement for peasant rights in Khulna.

Md. Alamin Howlader is a trainee from Southern part of Bangladesh Barguna district. His father is the BKF Barguna district committee general secretary. As a BKF leader’s son he has been involved with BKF works for a long time. He is also member of BKF Pathorghata sub-district youth committee. Now he is student of Dhaka University. He has been the assistant office secretary of BKF Dhaka city committee from early 2013.

Barguna is a district of which includes the bank of the sea and is a very low-lying area. BKF and BKS have strong land occupation movements there. Peasant rights, women’s rights and climate change are the major issues in Barguna.
